The Intruder
I’ve been feeding a stray cat for several months now. I know little about it except that it’s mostly white, usually comes after dark and is very timid.

Yesterday we were sitting in the garden, well Peter was sitting, I was planting some potatoes, when we noticed a cat in the next field behaving rather strangely.

Once upon a time, we were befriended by a scraggy old tom cat. Thin and scruffy he had obviously seen better days. His white and tabby coat was dull and he had many battle scars. He began to call on us each day, and I was only too pleased to provide him with a good meal.

Over the years I’ve discovered that cats, just like humans, have their favourite foods. For Jackson it was yoghurt, and Creamer was partial to M&S Sticky Toffee Pudding, or anything else he could lay his paws on. My mum even told me of her childhood cat that had a taste for oranges. However, with Dulcie it’s prawns.

We all like to catch a few rays when the sun is shining, and Dulcie is no exception. But as well as loving to sunbathe, Dulcie also loves a sunbeam.

At the grand old age of 14 years, you really would think she’d know better, but Dulcie, as ever, likes to keep us on our toes.
Having used up 3 of her nine lives in quick succession in her first 12 months, we thought that all the trauma of her early years was behind us. How wrong we were.

Why is it that when you bring your cat home from the vet following an operation, it never wants to sleep on the lovely warm cushion you’ve lovingly prepared for it? Legs going in all directions following the anaesthetic, you’d think it would be only too pleased to lay down quietely.

For 7 months back in 1997/98 we were between homes, having sold one, but not yet found another. That’s how we came to be squatting in 4 rooms above our shop, with our 4 cats.

Oliver and Smartie were two stray, black, tom cats, who found their way to our door, quite separately from each other during the last few years. Oliver was built like a brick shed, with muscles in places he shouldn’t even have had places. Smartie on the other hand was sleek and slim. His party piece, once he’d got to know me, was to rotate 360 degrees on his back, whilst I held his head in my cupped hand.

Adam said, ‘Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me every day, but now I don’t see you any more. I’m lonely, and it’s difficult for me to remember how much you love me.’And God said, ‘No problem! I will create a companion for you who will be with you for ever, and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you can remember my love even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish, or childish, or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself.’
